This is a research that aims to understand the way it constitutes what is interpreted as a
"language of suffering" within a long-term institution for the elderly in the city of Natal. We
undertake a socio-anthropological approach that, based on an ethnographic experience
involving participant observation, informal conversations and narratives of old and old
"residents", seeks to carry out a description of the Instituto Juvino Barreto Paying attention to

about the method of research, above all, questions of objectivity, written subjectivity and
emotions that Have crossed the experience. The study also seeks to highlight forms of resistance
to the language that predominated in the daily life of the elderly and older adults. Finally, the
possibility that the "language of suffering" is not isolated phenomenon, on the contrary, would
be linked to broader dimensions of the social, involving a state and society inserted in what
Marx Weber (1999) called "Disenchantment of the World" Which, hypothetically, would cross
with contemporary phenomena such as: rationalization of life, control of bodies, social
indifference, insensitivity to "others", lack of recognition and precarization of existences. A
scenario that is compatible with the discussions of anthropological literature on old age and
aging that point to the tendency constructed that older people would be a "social problem". |

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Esta é uma pesquisa que tem como objetivo compreender o modo como se constitui o que se interpreta como uma “linguagem do sofrimento” dentro de uma Instituição de Longa Permanência para Idosos no Município de Natal. Empreende-se uma abordagem sócioantropológica que, a partir de uma experiência etnográfica envolvendo observação participante, conversas informais e narrativas dos velhos e velhas “residentes”, busca realizar uma descrição do Instituto Juvino Barreto atentando para elementos institucionais que levaram à proposição da categoria analítica “linguagem do sofrimento” como chave interpretativa útil para a compreensão da vida no lugar. O pesquisador tenta evidenciar a força de uma estrutura linguística que conforma a cultura institucional, revelando-se no cheiro, nas brigas, na alimentação, na estrutura física, nos corpos e em aspectos peculiares da instituição total. Falase de uma estrutura-estruturante que agia de modo tão insidioso sendo capaz de afetar profundamente o pesquisador, o que levou a uma necessária discussão sobre o método da pesquisa, sobretudo, questões de objetividade, subjetividade escrita e emoções que atravessaram a vivência. No trabalho também busca-se evidenciar formas de resistência à linguagem que predominava no cotidiano dos idosos e idosas. Por fim, aventa-se a possibilidade de que a “linguagem do sofrimento”, não é fenômeno isolado, pelo contrário, estaria ligada a dimensões mais amplas do social, envolvendo um Estado e Sociedade inseridos no que Marx Weber (1999) chamou de “desencantamento do mundo” que, hipotericamente, se cruzaria com fenômenos contemporâneos como: racionalização da vida, controle de corpos, indiferença social, insensibilidade aos “outros”, falta de reconhecimento e precarização de existências.
