The same extension, when it adopts the prerogatives of popular education, converts itself in a wider perspective: it is assumed as a methodology that considers popular technical knowledge and backgroun, usually acquired through informal education, through the oral tradition of Family or Community cultures passed on over generations. Artisanal fishing is a profession, but it is also a popular culture and it is traditionally learnet by the new generations. Considering the core idea that the extension is redesigned when the idea concept of popular, this research aims to answer to what extent an extension course can be understood as popular extension and what are the resulting objective and subjective. To this end, the pioneer Course on Qualification for shellfish collectors from Cabedelo in 2007 was analyzed. In order to achieve this, interviews were applied with the participants of that action, managers, social actors and leaders who participated the development of the course. Still, as a qualitative scope, it has considered the theoretical assumptions of oral history, with the objective of telling the life trajectories of the instution offering and also the individuals attended by the given course. Throughout this study, it has been identified aspects aspects of the action that confirms that it can be understood as popular extension and that the participating community suffered positive changes after the pioneer experience of that project.

A extensão configura-se como educação não formal e está contida em ações para além dos muros da instituição e do ensino regular. Entretanto a definição gnosiológica do termo a identifica como uma maneira autoritária quando se limita a ser apenas transmissor de conhecimento. A mesma extensão, quando adota as prerrogativas da educação popular, converte-se numa perspectiva ampliada: assume-se como metodologia que considera os saberes e conhecimentos técnicos populares, adquiridos geralmente pela educação informal, através da tradição oral de culturas familiares ou comunitárias e passadas de geração para geração. A pesca artesanal é ofício, mas também é cultura popular e tradicionalmente apreendida pelas gerações mais novas. Tendo em vista a ideia central de que a extensão é ressignificada quando tangencia o conceito de popular, esta pesquisa almeja responder em que medida um curso de extensão pode ser entendido como extensão popular e quais os resultantes objetivos e subjetivos disso. Neste intuito, o Curso pioneiro de Capacitação para Marisqueiras de Cabedelo em 2007 foi analisado. Em se tratando de uma pesquisa com abordagem qualitativa, foram aplicadas entrevistas aos sujeitos participantes, aos gestores, atores sociais e lideranças que participaram de uma forma ou de outra de seu desenvolvimento. Ainda, no âmbito qualitativo, apropriou-se dos pressupostos teóricos da história oral, no intuito de contar as trajetórias de vida da instituição ofertante e dos indivíduos atendidos pelo curso evidenciado.
