Resumo: | The pipeline inspection using a device called Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) is a most
applied methods for data acquisition about the physical structure of these pipelines. It is
common for these PIGs to achieve speed peaks harmful for data collection, for pipeline, and
for the PIG itself. The objective of this Thesis is to propose the speed control of smart PIGs
using an electronically driven bypass valve for attenuation or elimination of theses speed
excursions. A Prototype PIG and a Testing Laboratory were used for the experimental tests.
The Prototype PIG has an innovatived bypass valve, which uses energy of the transported
fluid for its drive. This drive allows the deviation of part of the fluid through the Prototype
PIG causing a decrease of upstream pressure, which causes a decrease in the Prototype
PIG speed. The results are promising and show the speed control using the bypass valve,
which operates at low speeds. Mechanical limitations prevented the uniform movement of
the Prototype PIG, making it difficult to adjust the speed by the controller. The main
contribution of this work is the proposition of a speed controller for smart PIGs, allowing
them to perform a safe and reliable inspection with speeds within an acceptable range. This
Thesis aims to solve an oil industry problem in which the smart PIGs currently traveled the
entire length of the pipeline without speed control. |
