Therefore, this topic is used as primary object of this research. This study thereby aims to understand the relation between adjective clauses and their associated nominal relative clauses, elucidating which properties of the antecedent noun phrase (SN) may foster the use of restrictive or non-restrictive clauses. For this research, the study focused on adjective clauses with an explicit head noun. Methodologically, this study presents a qualitative and quantitative approach, considering as corpus news and reports of 25 editions from Tribuna do Norte newspaper, from May to August 2017. This work was developed based on the perspective of Functional Linguistics inspired by Talmy Givón, Joan Bybee, Elizabeth Traugott, Mário Martelotta, Angélica Furtado da Cunha, among others. The foundations and parameters of informativeness, figurativeness and iconicity were primarily used, in addition to the cline of clause combining developed by Hopper and Traugott (1993), Oliveira’s (2001) proposal for a continuous process of adjectivation and Souza’s (2009) for a continuous process of SN specification. The results indicated that restrictive adjective clauses tend to occur frequently with less defined antecedents, whereas non-restrictive adjective clauses are encountered in greater numbers with more defined antecedents. Regarding the informational status, we noticed that most of the new antecedents are anchored by restrictive adjective sentences, while the non-restrictive ones anchor more SN evoked and available. Nevertheless, nonrestrictive clauses can be considered as a source of information, playing a more discursive and argumentative role by focusing on the antecedent qualities that are relevant to the discursive context of the matrix clause and the text in which it is encountered.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) A relação entre as adjetivas restritivas e as explicativas e as propriedades dos referentes a que elas se vinculam é um assunto pouco explorado por pesquisadores. Tal temática constitui nosso objeto primário de pesquisa. Neste trabalho, temos como objetivo compreender a relação existente entre orações adjetivas e seus referentes nominais, elucidando que propriedades semânticas e discursivo-pragmáticas do SN antecedente podem favorecer o uso de orações adjetivas restritivas ou de adjetivas explicativas. Para esta pesquisa, nosso recorte incide sobre as adjetivas desenvolvidas que possuem um referente explícito. Metodologicamente, trata-se de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualiquantitativa que toma como corpus notícias e reportagens de 25 edições do jornal Tribuna do Norte, datadas de maio a agosto de 2017. Desenvolvemos este trabalho sob a perspectiva do Funcionalismo Linguístico Clássico, inspirado em Talmy Givón, Joan Bybee, Elizabeth Traugott, Mário Martelotta, Angélica Furtado da Cunha, entre outros. Utilizamos mais diretamente os princípios e parâmetros da informatividade, perspectivação, figuricidade e iconicidade, além do cline de integração oracional desenvolvido por Hopper e Traugott (1993), a proposta de Oliveira (2001) para um contínuo de adjetivação, a proposta de Souza (2009) de um contínuo de especificação de SN e a pesquisa de Leitão (2009) quanto aos aspectos discursivo-pragmáticos das orações explicativas. Os resultados indicam que orações adjetivas restritivas tendem a ocorrer mais com antecedentes menos definidos, enquanto as explicativas ocorrem em maior número com antecedentes mais definidos. Com relação ao status informacional, notamos que a maioria dos antecedentes novos são ancorados por orações restritivas, enquanto as explicativas ancoram mais SN evocados e disponíveis. Do ponto de vista discursivo, vemos também que as restritivas desempenham uma função de compensar o baixo nível de informação do antecedente.
