Resumo:It is here presented the methodology followed for determining the extent of contamination and salinity in an area with a shrimp farm in the locality of Baixa da Quixaba, on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte state. We conducted the mapping of apparent conductivity with the equipment EM-34 and evaluated the cause of the contamination. Hydrogeologic mapping was also conducted for identification of aquifer units and the determination of the salts contained in these units, enabling the classification of the ground and surface water in accordance with the Piper diagram and assessing their relationship with the lithologies of the studied area. The methodology allowed evaluating the influence of the shrimp industries in its surroundings and their interaction with the available water resources. In this way, two different working steps were performed; in the first stage it was investigated the extent of the contaminated area (indirect method) and in the second stage we tried to access the mechanisms of salinity in the area under investigation, thus confirming the interference of industry producing prawns in the constitution of surface water and groundwater in the Baixa da Quixaba area.
