In Brazil, the increase in life expectancy and the ageing population, associated with high
levels of degenerative chronic diseases, provided an increment on the demand of palliative
care, which is vital for the person’s quality of life and their relatives in face of diseases that
threaten the continuity of life. In this regard, the nurse must attend the patient in an integral
and sensitive way, always concerning the physical, psychological, social and spiritual
dimensions, acting as a link between the patient, family and the other team members, being
the professional with the highest opportunity to establish the care practices. However, one
highlights that the nurses or the nursing students are not yet ready to deal with the patient in
palliative care. This study’s objective is to analyze the teaching of palliative care in the
nursing education at the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It is about an exploratory-descriptive
study, with a qualitative approach. The place of study will be both, public and private
university education institutions, from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, recognized by the
Minister of Education and Culture, on-site and active courses in 2018. Its participants were
eleven coordinators from graduation courses in nursing and nine pedagogical projects. The
research was fulfilled with two stages: 1) Semi structured interview accompanied by a script
with the coordinators, regarding the teaching of palliative care during the nurse’s formation,
with the participants’ characterization; 2) Descriptive analysis of the pedagogical projects and
the investigated institution’s characterization. Bardin’s thematic content analysis with
Minayo’s adaptation and the philosophic theoretical reference of Edgar Morin was used. The
study received the assent from the Committee of Ethics in Research from the Federal
University of Rio Grande do Norte with CAAE nº 91830118.7.0000.5537. As results, three
thematic categories were identified: 1. Palliative care regarding the coordinators point of
view; 2. Nursing formation in palliative care; 3. Potentialities of teaching in palliative care; 4.
Challenges of teaching in palliative care. The analyzed results, from the pedagogical projects,
highlighted the absence of the palliative care content as a mandatory or optional discipline in
all researched university education institutions, as well as the lack of the term “palliative care”
inside the academic discipline summaries on most institutions. These findings reinforce the
thesis that Brazilian nursing, especially regarding this study’s context, shows a void in the
nursing formation related to palliative care, and it responds to the literature evidences about
the lived hardships and unpreparedness of professionals and nursing student when assisting
patients with palliative care. One highlights the need of a reflection in relation to the nursing
formation, given the theme’s current importance in the health professionals’ teaching, upon
considering the population’s epidemiologic profile for chronic conditions, and the crescent
need of palliative care, that reveals itself as a challenge for the coordinators, professors and
nurses, as it is a new demand of care. |

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) No Brasil, o aumento da expectativa de vida e o envelhecimento da população, associados aos altos índices das condições crônicas não transmissíveis, propiciaram o aumento da demanda por cuidados paliativos, fundamentais para a qualidade de vida da pessoa e seus familiares diante de doenças que ameaçam a continuidade da vida. Neste sentido, o enfermeiro deve assistir ao paciente de forma integral e sensível, em suas dimensões física, psicológica, social e espiritual, atuando como elo entre o paciente e a família e os demais membros da equipe, sendo o profissional com maior oportunidade de efetivação para as práticas de cuidado. No entanto, evidencia-se que os enfermeiros ou graduandos em enfermagem, em geral, ainda não estão preparados para lidar com o paciente em cuidados paliativos. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o ensino dos cuidados paliativos na formação do enfermeiro no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte. Trata-se de um estudo do tipo descritivo-exploratório, de abordagem qualitativa. Os locais de estudo foram as instituições de ensino superior, públicas e privadas, do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, reconhecidas pelo Ministério da Educação e Cultura, presenciais e ativas em 2018. Participaram do estudo 11 coordenadores dos cursos de graduação em enfermagem e nove projetos pedagógicos. A pesquisa foi realizada em duas etapas: 1) Entrevista semiestruturada acompanhada, por um roteiro com os coordenadores, sobre o ensino de cuidados paliativos durante a formação do enfermeiro, com a caracterização dos participantes; 2) Análise documental dos projetos pedagógicos e caracterização da instituição investigada. Os dados qualitativos foram trabalhados através da análise de conteúdo temática de Bardin com adaptação da autora Minayo e o referencial teórico filosófico de Edgar Morin. O estudo obteve parecer favorável do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte com CAAE n° 91830118.7.0000.5537. Através dos resultados, identificaram-se quatro categorias temáticas: 1. Cuidados paliativos na concepção de coordenadores; 2. Formação do enfermeiro em cuidados paliativos; 3. Potencialidades do ensino em cuidados paliativos; 4. Desafios do ensino em cuidados paliativos. Evidenciou-se a ausência do conteúdo de cuidados paliativos como componente curricular obrigatório ou optativo em todas as instituições de ensino superior pesquisadas, bem como a ausência do termo nas ementas das disciplinas na maioria das instituições. Estes achados reforçam a tese de que a enfermagem brasileira, em especial do contexto deste estudo, apresenta uma lacuna na formação do enfermeiro em cuidados paliativos, e responde às evidências da literatura sobre as dificuldades vivenciadas e o despreparo dos profissionais e acadêmicos de enfermagem ao assistirem pacientes em cuidados paliativos.
