Studies on the productive potential of wood in native forests, involving productivity and
technological characteristics of wood, collaborate to understand the potential of these and the
amount of energy available after the exploration. Thus, the objective of this study was to
evaluate wood productivity and wood properties for energy in an area managed after shallow
cutting and to estimate the age of rotation of the stands. The selected area, Fazenda Milhã /
Poço da Pedra, in the municipality of João Câmara, RN, was divided into 15 plots. Then, four
were selected with their respective cutting ages, namely: Field 1 (T1): 12.3 years; Field 8
(T8): 9.3 years; Field 12 (T12): 7.2 years and Field 6 (T6): 6.6 years of cutting. Casually, ten
rectangular plots (20 m x 20 m) were selected per plot. After analyzing the inventory of the
plots, the species with a minimum of 70% representative of the area were selected:
Poincianella pyramidalys (Tul.) LQ Queiroz, Caparis flexuosa L, Ziziphus joazeiro Mart,
Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke, Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poiret, Croton sonderianus
Müll. Arg. and Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart. Three sample trees of each species were
felled, and samples were taken at a height of 1.30 m from the soil (DBH) to determine the
basic density, immediate composition, higher calorific value of the wood, density energy and
energy stock. In order to estimate the wood volume of each plot, the average shape factor
calculated by the cubage of the selected trees was applied and then the average production per
hectare was estimated. After the cut in each plot, the cutting age (rotation age) of the area
under study was estimated. Among the species studied, the black jurema (Mimosa tenuiflora)
stands out for the energy production, being distinguished by its high values of fixed carbon,
higher calorific value and basic density, as well as low ash value. implementation of energy
forest. The adjustment of the growth and yield curves for estimates of future production
suggests the cut of the Caatinga species at 17.3 years of regeneration. Finally, it is worth
mentioning that, despite the fact that such study was conducted in an area under forest
management, environmental, social and economic aspects were not evaluated, and future
research is needed for a better understanding. |

Finally, it is worth mentioning that, despite the fact that such study was conducted in an area under forest management, environmental, social and economic aspects were not evaluated, and future research is needed for a better understanding.
