Despite all the new relevant technological breakthroughs boosting the search for the cure of
cancer and improving the paediatrician cancer patient’s quality of life, children still face the
consequences of diagnosis acknowledgement, treatment itself and further repercussions by
experiencing grief and suffering. Thus, it is important to seek useful resources in order to help
them deal with those issues. This studied aimed to understand if/how spirituality and/or
religiosity may help to effectively build a comprehensive and humanized care. For that end, a
qualitative research was conducted among 9 children (both male and female) with cancer at
school age (from 6 to 10 years old) hospitalized on the Oncology-Hematology unit of a
reference children’s hospital at Natal/RN. The study was based in the Gadamerian
Hermeneutics and used the process of narrative interview mediated by ludic and projective
resources: the “character-doll” – an instrument to promote dialogue - and drawings. The
beginning of the discussion is led by a chapter called “The constructed childhood: unraveling
child representations throughout history and its interfaces with child listening in research area”.
It presents a brief analysis of childhood’s historical construction and its repercussions on
scientific production. In addition, the completion includes the presentation of the research’s
little participants. During the dialogue with the narratives other three chapters emerged: “On
account of a tumor”: the path of illness, treatment and the its meanings to children. The topic
shows the multiple significances in the experience of becoming sick, hospitalization as long
process - typified by feelings of fear, sadness, invasive procedures and privation. 2) “Getting to
know the allies of our children”. This section refers to the resources recognized by children as
facilitating agents during their confrontation with hospital and treatment’s vulnerabilities. As
well as discussing about the act of play, the hospital class, the caretakers, the good emotions
and other issues. 3) “When God helps by helping”: religiosity and spirituality among children
with cancer and the Humanized Care. Regardless of the lack of conceptualization about such
terms, the religious dimension - prayers and belief in God – and the spiritual dimension have
arisen as vital resources of coping and and contributed to build positive meanings in the context
cancer treatment and hospitalization. This work proposes, at the end, the effective use of both
spiritual interview via a ludic mediation and drawings. By doing so, health professionals will
be able to access – through the eyes of a child - and understand how the Religious and Spiritual
dimensions may be used as source of support to children under the conditions aforementioned.
Under this perspective, the work reinforces the need to include religiosity and spirituality on
paediatric assistance system in order to promote a more comprehensive and humanized care. |

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Apesar dos consideráveis avanços científicos para o alcance da cura e qualidade de vida do paciente oncológico pediátrico, o impacto do diagnóstico do câncer, o tratamento e suas repercussões são vivenciados pelas crianças com dor e sofrimento. Desse modo, percebe-se a necessidade de que elas busquem recursos para enfrentar tais problemáticas. Este estudo teve como objetivo compreender se e como a espiritualidade e/ou a religiosidade, enquanto recurso de enfrentamento para as crianças em tratamento oncológico, pode contribuir para a efetivação de um cuidado humanizado e integral. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa, com a participação de 9 crianças com câncer, em idade escolar (6-12 anos), de ambos os sexos, hospitalizadas no setor de onco-hematologia de um hospital infantil referência em oncologia na cidade de Natal/RN. O estudo foi ancorado na Hermenêutica Gadameriana e para o acesso das narrativas infantis, utilizou-se a entrevista narrativa mediada por recursos lúdicos e projetivos: o “boneco-personagem” – como elemento de mediação do diálogo – e o desenho. O início do percurso de discussão é demarcado pelo capítulo denominado “A infância construída: destecendo as representações infantis ao longo da história e suas interfaces com a escuta das crianças na pesquisa”, o qual trata de uma breve análise da construção histórica da infância e suas repercussões na produção científica sobre ela. Além disso, sua finalização conta com a apresentação dos pequenos participantes deste estudo. No diálogo com as narrativas, três outros capítulos surgiram: 1) “Por conta de um tumor”: a trajetória de adoecimento, tratamento e seus significados para as crianças, o qual evidencia as significações da experiência de adoecimento e hospitalização como um processo longo, marcado por sentimentos de medo, tristezas, procedimentos invasivos e privações que o adoecimento e tratamento acarretam; 2) “Conhecendo os aliados das nossas crianças”. Este trata dos recursos reconhecidos pelas crianças como facilitadores no enfretamento das vulnerabilidades presentes na hospitalização e tratamento, como o brincar, a classe hospitalar, os cuidadores, os bons sentimentos, entre outros; 3) Quando “Deus ajuda ajudando”: a religiosidade e espiritualidade nas crianças com câncer e o Cuidado Humanizado. Neste, notou-se a ausência de conceituações sobre tais termos, porém a dimensão religiosa– orações e crença em Deus – e a espiritual surgiram como propiciadoras de recursos de enfrentamento e contribuíram na construção de significados positivos para as experiências no universo de tratamento do câncer e hospitalização. O trabalho sugere, por fim, a utilização de uma entrevista espiritual com uso de uma mediação lúdica e o emprego do desenho para que, assim, os profissionais de saúde tenham acesso e compreendam, a partir do olhar infantil, como essas dimensões podem ser fontes de auxílio, valorizando-as.
