description The research now presented is centered in the study of the commercial dynamics of the traditional commercial areas in the context of Natal‟s production of urban space. The theoretical direction is landed in the theory of production of the space and in its concepts and analysis categories, but also in the concepts of city, urban and commercial forms. Based on the regressive-progressive method of Henri Lefebvre, it was started from reading of the object of study to make a description of the current moment, so that afterwards, it would be returned to the past, seeking to analyze the different moments, the processes and the agents that have delineated the materiality present. Finally, it is intended to resume the elucidated present to understand it in its contradictions and perspectives designed to the future. From the empirical point of view, it is reported to the production of Natal‟s urban space to understand the recent processes that give meaning to a new commercial dynamic, with the insertion of new spaces to the city‟s commercial practice at the same time that traditional commercial spaces remain in the city context. As methodology it was used bibliographical search in books and journals for the purpose of theoretical discussion, besides secondary data collection in many institutions and field research with the objective of undertaking systematic observations, interviews, as well as producing photographical material about the area studied. The thesis defended here is that even though in the process of production of the urban space in Natal the commercial activity has expanded to other areas of the city, such activity remained in the traditional commercial areas that contain the neighborhoods of Ribeira, Cidade Alta and Alecrim. The results indicate that this commerce, specially retailing, of a high popular character, is remade in the context of expansion, modernization and diversification of city commerce. From this combination of processes, there is, currently a center that traditionally has hosted the commercial activity and that maintains diverse conditions of centrality, its reference point. Underlying to these diverse conditions, there is, as a result, a dynamic that has been marking differently the commerce in these neighborhoods.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) A pesquisa ora apresentada centra-se no estudo sobre a dinâmica comercial das áreas tradicionais de comércio no contexto da produção do espaço urbano de Natal. O direcionamento teórico se aporta na teoria da produção do espaço e em seus conceitos e categorias de análise, mas, também, nos conceitos de cidade, urbano e formas comerciais. Com base no método regressivoprogressivo de Henri Lefebvre, parte-se da leitura do objeto de estudo ao fazer uma descrição do momento atual, para em seguida, regressar ao passado na busca de analisar os diferentes momentos, os processos e os agentes que delinearam a materialidade presente. Por fim, pretende-se retomar o presente elucidado para compreendê-lo em suas contradições e as perspectivas desenhadas para o futuro. Do ponto de vista empírico, reporta-se à produção do espaço urbano da cidade do Natal para compreender os processos recentes que dão sentido à uma nova dinâmica comercial, com a inserção de novos espaços para a prática comercial citadina ao mesmo tempo em que os espaços tradicionais de comércio se mantêm no contexto da cidade. Como metodologia utilizou-se levantamento bibliográfico em livros e periódicos para efeito de discussão teórica, além de coleta de dados secundários em diversos órgãos e pesquisa de campo com o objetivo de empreender observações sistemáticas, entrevistas, bem como produzir material fotográfico sobre a área em estudo. A tese que se defende na pesquisa é a de que ainda que no processo de produção do espaço urbano de Natal, a atividade comercial tenha se expandido para outras áreas da cidade, essa atividade permaneceu nas áreas tradicionais de comércio que compreendem os bairros da Ribeira, Cidade Alta e Alecrim. Os resultados indicam que esse comércio, sobretudo o varejista, de acentuado caráter popular, se refaz no contexto da expansão, modernização e diversificação do comércio citadino. Dessa combinação de processos, tem-se, na atualidade um centro que tradicionalmente sediou a atividade comercial e que mantém condições de centralidade diversas, sendo a atividade comercial, seu ponto de referência.
