Resumo: | The present research was motivated due to the importance of urban green areas for
the city of Natal, where we observe that such spaces are being neglected. This work is
structured in two chapters with the main objectives of (1) to presente an updated
floristic checklist for three Environmental Protection Areas (EPAs) of the city, and to
propose to connect such áreas with green corridors; and (2) to investigate the
understanding of the population, as well as environmental public agents, about the
green areas of the city and how they evaluate the possibility of having a botanical
garden (BG) in the municipality, by the use of the Discrete Choice methodology, and
the Contingent valuation, applying the Willingness to Pay method. The floristic survey
registers a great number of species, equivalent to about a third of the total flora of the
State. A proposal of connection include an approximate area of 2,000 ha, comprising
seven neighborhoods of the South zone of the city. The population agrees with
protection of urban forest fragments, although a large part is unaware of its protection
or relevant legislation, which partly explains why such areas are underutilized or poorly
protected, in practice. About 94% of the population interviewed favor the implantation of
a BG in Natal, and the Ponta Negra neighborhood was the most cited (21%). Most
interviewees agree on hypotheses of direct donation or donation from municipalities
taxes to maintain the creation of a possible BG, indicating a demand for conserved
green areas that can be enjoyed. |
