Resumo:The aim of this work is to understand how unofficial obstetric practices have formed in the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. Considering the social changes that have occurred in the relationship between childbirth and obstetric assistance in recent decades, I seek to analyze aspects seen across the activities of midwives in their own communities today, where the role they play goes beyond childbirth. Addressing their career development, conflicts with the formal health system, dialogue with governmental institutions and the incorporation of new concepts of exercise, I aim to work on devising practical considerations in an anthropological perspective. Therefore, I will focus this dissertation on the work of midwives, something that is not only learned from popular knowledge, but is also sufficiently flexible to be able to incorporate elements of other practices and reconcile them with each other. Thus, it is that coming-together of what is considered modern and traditional that marks the recent practice of midwives, whose work brings together several aspects and power relationship that, directly or indirectly, define that configuration and the concrete space it occupies.
