The dynamics of this renovation allowed geographers - especially those humanists - to work with symbolic codes and representations of the world by Literature, Photography, Cinema etc. Cinematographic works, in particular, have gained significance for a geographic analyses. Notwithstanding, different understandings about the Cinema and consequently about the ways to analyze it, brought to films their own statute, escaping from the mimetic notion that film is a copy of reality. Nowadays, then, it is postulated that the Cinema is a way to present the world and, therefore, it is imbued with discourses about space. The Cinema is an important subject for the studies on perception and experience within space, place and arising affections which are held under the landscape language's aegis. Based on these assumptions, the aim here is to analyze how place, in its phenomenological-existential conception, manifests itself in the film The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), discussing about the relationship between Geography and Cinema, about place, as well as about the concept of landscape. Along with the bibliographic search, the hermeneutics procedure shapes the analysis of specific frames taken from the film and also some of the characters’ lines. The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) presents a sense of place and experiences of the living in many and different environments, setting out a geographic discourse of an anti-modernist contente.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Geografia e Arte dialogam desde o princípio da ciência geográfica, mas elas se avizinharam com mais vigor durante o processo de recuperação da abordagem cultural da Geografia. A dinâmica dessa renovação propiciou os geógrafos – sobretudo, os humanistas – a trabalhar com códigos simbólicos e modos de apresentação do mundo como a Literatura, a Fotografia, o Cinema etc. Assim, as obras cinematográficas, em especial, tem ganhado relevo nas análises geográficas. Não obstante os diversos entendimentos acerca do Cinema e, consequentemente, dos modos de analisá-lo, compreende-se que os filmes possuem um estatuto próprio, fugindo da concepção mimética que entende as obras cinematográficas como cópias da realidade. Atualmente, então, postula-se que o Cinema é um modo de apresentar o mundo e que, portanto, está trespassado de discursos espaciais. Além disso, o Cinema é um importante elemento nos estudos sobre percepção e experiências com e no espaço e suas decorrentes afetividades, conduzindo aos estudos sobre o lugar, sendo estes, por sua vez, realizados sob a égide da linguagem da paisagem. Partindo desses pressupostos, este trabalho analisa como o lugar, na sua concepção fenomenológica-existencial, se manifesta na obra fílmica O Senhor dos Anéis: A Sociedade do Anel (2001). Para tanto, discute-se sobre os entrelaces entre Geografia e Cinema, acerca do lugar e seus conceitos satélites bem como sobre a paisagem. Além do levantamento bibliográfico, este trabalho tem bases em um procedimento hermenêutico de análise de um acervo composto por imagens fílmicas e transcrições textuais de falas de personagens.
