In addition, the functional performance of a component is strongly dependent on its surface quality. The development of new in-process techniques able to improve the workpiece surface integrity is one of the emerging areas in manufacturing. Thus, the objective of this work has been to investigate the influence of the cryogenic cooling on the machinability of quenched and tempered AISI D6 steel and compare the results with dry machining. Surface hardness, hardened layer thickness, surface residual stress, surface roughness, tool wear and chip morphology have been the output variables. The results have showed that the cryogenic cooling has been able to reduce tool wear and give better surface roughness compared to the dry machining within the category N4. Higher values of compressive residual stress and hardness on the machined surface for the cryo condition compared to the dry condition have been verified. The application of LN2 also have reduced the hardened layer thickness and provided better tool performance and chip control. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) A maior demanda de peças usinadas em aço endurecido vem intensificando à busca por novas soluções que proporcionem uma menor taxa de desgaste das ferramentas aliadas à técnicas sustentáveis, que também é uma preocupação crescente no meio industrial. Além disso, o desempenho em trabalho de um componente usinado é fortemente influenciado pelas características das superfícies produzidas. O desenvolvimento de novos métodos que visem aprimorar, durante o processo, as características da integridade superficial das peças usinadas é uma das áreas emergentes na engenharia de fabricação. Desta forma, este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar a influência da refrigeração criogênica no torneamento do aço ferramenta ABNT D6, no estado temperado e revenido, com ferramentas de PCBN, comparado com a usinagem a seco. As variáveis analisadas foram a espessura da camada modificada formada na peça, tensão residual, microdureza e rugosidade da superfície usinada, vida e desgaste das ferramentas e análise morfológica dos cavacos. Os resultados mostraram que o uso da refrigeração criogênica reduziu a taxa de desgaste das arestas, quando comparado à usinagem isenta de fluido, além de reduzir a rugosidade da peça, sendo possível produzir um acabamento presente na classe N4. As condições criogênicas também proporcionaram maiores valores de tensão residual compressiva e de microdureza na superfície da peça usinada. A aplicação de LN2 também reduziu a espessura da camada modificada formada durante o processo.
