Linking research and teaching, it is in this period that professional ethno-graphy starts in France: the two ‘Lévi-Strauss’ missions, in 1935 and 1938, comprise the project of collecting objects for the Musée de l'Homme and at the same time, represent the beginning of a new phase of Americanism no longer oriented to material culture, but to the study of social structures. We will appraise the importance of this shift of emphasis for Americanist studies in the Amazon and the consolidation of a network of international research during World War II emphasizing French participation (Métraux and Lévi-Strauss) in the Handbook of South American Indians. Nos trabalhos precursores da antropologia francesa, verificamos que as técnicas e a cultura material ocupam um lugar de destaque: o Musée de l'Homme, inaugurado em 1937, não é mais um museu colonial, é um museu moderno que apresenta testemunhos da diversidade das sociedades humanas e que foi pensado como a vitrine da humanidade. Unindo a pesquisa ao ensino, é neste período que a etnografia profissional inicia na França: as duas missões ‘Lévi-Strauss’, em 1935 e 1938, integram o projeto de colecionar objetos para o Musée de l'Homme e, ao mesmo tempo, marcam o início de uma nova fase do Americanismo voltado não mais para a cultura material, mas para o estudo das estruturas sociais.
