To accomplish this goal, the main primary sources researched was the parish records of baptism. Thus, areas of the parish were designed based on two fundamental concepts: Christianization of the locations (and souls), based on the study of Claudia Damasceno, who worked with the notion of ecclesiastical circumscription, adapted for the case of Parish of Our lady of Presentation, and the concept of local experimentation, by Yi-Fu Tuan. Christianization the areas was the process of transformation of spatial logic, found previously by the Portuguese, by overlapping the ecclesiastical logic over Indigenous perception, through buildings construction, to initiate people to Catholicism. The experiment, in turn, would be made by the local residents studied and by religious themselves, making these areas, in places, in the sense of achieving new local meanings. It was verified, therefore, that Parish of Our lady of Presentation had at least three distinct places, the City of Natal, the villages around and the parish missions. Then, the focus of this thesis is to analyze how settlers used these different places as religious meanings. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) O intuito deste trabalho foi analisar o processo de cristianização nos diferentes espaços da Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação, no período compreendido entre 1681 e 1714. Para isso, o principal fundo documental pesquisado foi o livro de registro de batismo da freguesia em questão, sendo o recorte da pesquisa pautado pelos dados encontrados. Assim, os espaços da freguesia foram pensados com base em dois conceitos fundamentais: o de cristianização dos espaços (e das almas), baseado na obra de Cláudia Damasceno, que trabalhou com a noção de circunscrição eclesiástica, mas reelaborado para o caso da Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação; e o conceito de experimentação espacial, de Yi-Fu Tuan. Cristianizar os espaços representava o processo de transformação da lógica espacial, encontrada previamente pelos portugueses, por meio da inserção da lógica eclesiástica, fosse pela construção de prédios, fosse pela iniciação das pessoas ao catolicismo. A experimentação, por sua vez, seria feita pelos moradores das localidades estudadas, bem como pelos próprios religiosos, transformando esses espaços em lugares, à medida que conferiam novos significados a essas áreas. Percebeu-se, portanto, que a Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação contava com, pelo menos, três espaços distintos, o da Cidade do Natal, o dos aldeamentos e o espaço de atuação das Missões Populares, sendo esses diversos espaços o foco deste trabalho.
