Este texto teve como principal objetivo reunir diversas experiências de pesquisadores que fizeram trabalhos pioneiros de campo no interior das prisões brasileiras durante o século XX. Para isso, foram examinadas algumas das principais contribuições de quatro pesquisas fundamentais reportadas nas obras: “Crime e Sociedade” (1973) de Célia Maria Leal Braga, “Cemitério dos Vivos” (1976) de Julita Lemgruber, “O Mundo do Crime” (1979) de José Ricardo Ramalho e “Oficina do Diabo” (1987) de Edmundo Campos Coelho. Desde a primeira década do séc. XXI um número maior e crescente de pesquisadores tem se dedicado a empreitadas de pesquisa no interior dos cárceres pelo país. Contudo, a configuração deste campo de estudos em nosso país não seria a mesma sem os avanços obtidos por esses trabalhos pioneiros aqui examinados. Dentre os aspectos observados demos atenção às metodologias e técnicas de pesquisa, conceitos e influências principais presentes em cada um dos trabalhos.AbstractThis paper aimed to gather diverse experiences of researchers who did pioneer fieldwork within Brazilian prisons during the twentieth century. For this paper some of the main contributions of four key studies presented in the following works were examined: “Crime e Sociedade” (1973) Celia Maria Leal Braga, “Cemitério dos Vivos” (1976) Julita Lemgruber, “O Mundo do Crime” (1979) José Ricardo Ramalho and “Oficina do Diabo” (1987) Edmundo Campos Coelho. Since the first decade of the twenty first century a larger and growing number of researchers have been devoted to developing fieldwork inside prisons across the country. However, the configuration of this field of study in our country would not be the same without the advances achieved by these pioneer works examined here. Among the aspects we observed, we gave attention to methodologies and research techniques, concepts and key influences present in each work.
