Resumo: | This study explores the intersection between the practical use of language and the range of mental processes involved in the acquisition and use of knowledge, with a focus on fantastic literature. Through the analysis of Julio Cortázar's short story Continuidad de los Parques, the study investigates how language shapes our cognition and organizes our perceptual-motor experiences. The study identifies three main cognitive processes activated during reading: evocation, integration, and emulation. Evocation is the process by which certain concepts or domains are brought to the reader's mind through linguistic cues in the text. Integration is the process of combining cognitive schemas in the formation of complex schemas that support the emulation of frames. Finally, emulation is the schematic structure of conceptual domains and how such structures emulate frames. The results suggest that language, in creating worlds that challenge the reader's cognition, can be seen as a tool for mental modeling, opening new perspectives for understanding the interaction between language and thought. |
