We start from the general hypothesis that the work is constituted within an intersemiotic perspective and that the relationship established between conventional signs (words) and iconic signs (illustrations) goes beyond theoretical categorizations of complementarity or simple correspondence between the visual text and the verbal text. For this, we take as our main theoretical basis, authors such as Genette (1995) and Franco Jr. (2009) regarding Narratology; and Nikolajeva and Scott (2011) of intersemiotic theory. Este artigo objetiva compreender como se configura a narrativa de Abishag – hóspede inevitável (2012), de João Câmara, na relação intersemiótica entre texto verbal e texto visual, dentro do contexto do livro ilustrado. Partimos da hipótese geral de que a obra é constituída dentro de uma perspectiva intersemiótica e que a relação estabelecida entre os signos convencionais (palavras) e os signos icônicos (ilustrações) ultrapassa categorizações teóricas de complementação ou de simples correspondência entre o texto visual e o texto verbal. Chegamos a comprovar que, em Abishag, o texto visual não serve somente como complemento ao texto escrito, ou como uma fiel ilustração daquilo que está sendo dito, juntamente com o texto verbal, ele ultrapassa categorizações. Para tanto, tomamos como base teórica principal, autores como Genette (1995), Franco Jr. (2009) no tocante à Narratologia e Nikolajeva e Scott (2011) no âmbito da teoria intersemiótica.
