However, studies about specific aspects in the teaching-learning process of this AL and Phonological Awareness (PA) skills are scarce. Understanding PA as an ability of reflection and manipulation of language, we discuss theoretical issues about PA skills in English by children inserted in a bilingual education context. Our understanding is that PA is important for the successful development of reading and writing skills in the child's bilingual process, considering that reflection on sounds of the mother language (L1) can happen in the phonological system of the other language. Using a bibliographic and survey methodology, we present a literature review on bilingual education in Brazil and bilingualism, as well as remarks on PA in L1 and LA. Discussões acerca do ensino-aprendizagem de inglês como língua adicional (LA) no contexto de educação bilíngue no Brasil têm se expandido nos últimos anos. Contudo, estudos sobre aspectos específicos no processo de ensino-aprendizagem dessa LA e habilidades de Consciência Fonológica (CF) são escassos. Compreendendo a CF como habilidade de reflexão e manipulação da língua, discutimos questões teóricas sobre as habilidades de CF em inglês por crianças inseridas em contexto de educação bilíngue. Nossa compreensão é que a CF é importante para o sucesso no desenvolvimento da leitura e da escrita no processo bilíngue da criança, considerando que a reflexão sobre sons da língua materna (L1) pode acontecer no sistema fonológico da outra língua. Usando de uma metodologia bibliográfica e de pesquisa, trazemos uma revisão de literatura sobre a educação bilíngue no Brasil e o biletramento, bem como apontamentos sobre a CF na L1 e na LA.
