It was found that, in addition to the complexity of articulating such distinct higher education systems, ENLACES itself faces the chal-lenge of achieving its consolidation. In view of this, although there are expectations regarding the viability of this Space, there is a great challenge in the face of the academic diversity in the region. Similarly, its possible role as an agent in strengthening regional identity is compromised in view of the difficulty of consolidation. |

El presente artículo propone un análisis de la viabilidad del Espacio Latinoamericano y Caribeño de Educación Superior (ENLACES), así como de su potencial como agente de la regionalidad ante la coyuntura de la educación superior en la región. Este trabajo se centró en la perspectiva del nuevo regionalismo de Björn Hettne y en el enfoque cualitativo, así como en el análisis de documentos y en la realización de entrevistas semiestructuradas con actores que están o estuvieron vinculados al proceso de construcción del ENLACES; y, para la exploración de los datos, se utilizó la técnica de análisis de contenido. Se constató que, además de la complejidad de articular los sistemas de educación superior tan distintos, el propio ENLACES enfrenta el desafío de conseguir su consolidación. Ante esto, a pesar de haber expectativas en cuanto a la viabilidad de ese Espacio, hay un gran desafío ante la diversidad académica existente en la región. Asimismo, su posible papel como agente en el fortalecimiento de la identidad regional queda comprometido en vista de la dificultad de consolidación. O presente artigo propõe uma análise da viabilidade do Espaço Latino-americano e Caribenho de Educação Superior (ENLACES), bem como de seu potencial como agente da regionalidade em face da conjuntura da educação superior na região. Pautou-se na perspectiva do novo regionalismo de Björn Hettne e na abordagem qualitativa, assim como na análise de documentos e na realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas com atores que estão ou estiveram vinculados ao processo de construção do ENLACES; e, para exploração dos dados, foi utilizada a técnica de análise de conteúdo. Constatou-se que, além da complexidade de articular os sistemas de educação superior tão distintos, o próprio ENLACES enfrenta o desafio de conseguir sua consolidação. Diante disso, apesar de haver expectativas quanto à viabilidade desse Espaço, há um grande desafio diante da diversidade acadêmica existente na região.
