This is a qualitative research with the use of photographic images made available in 3 internet sites. Photography is discussed based on the studies of Kossoy (2001), Mauad (2008) and Ciavatta (2012). The importance of photographs as a way of keeping memory was verified and it is highlighted the fact that these documents are full of senses and meanings that need to be questioned and interpreted considering the context and the reason of its production and propagation. Neste artigo, discute-se acerca do projeto “40 horas de Angicos”, desenvolvido pelo educador Paulo Freire, nos anos 1960, no interior do Rio Grande do Norte. Foram analisadas 4 fotografias referentes ao projeto aludido e que guardam a memória desse importante fato da história da educação no Brasil. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa com o uso de imagens fotográficas disponibilizadas em 3 sites da internet. Discute-se a fotografia a partir dos estudos de Kossoy (2001), Mauad (2008) e Ciavatta (2012). Constatou-se a importância das fotografias como uma forma de guarda da memória e salienta-se o fato de que esses documentos são repletos de sentidos e significados que precisam ser questionados e interpretados considerando o contexto e o porquê de sua produção e veiculação.
