This teaching case was designed to provide students of graduate or executive education programs access to knowledge of succession cases in family businesses, contributing to the analysis of phenomena that occur in their realities. The experience reported here refers to the story of the family succession process at the Mater Dei hospital, conducted by the founding partner, Dr. José Salvador Silva, whose desire was to guarantee the company's longevity in view of the statistics that most family businesses cannot survive to the third generation of the Family (SOUZA, 2020). With the adequate preparation of the four children, it was possible to implement rules for the work of family members in the family business, including members of future generations. At the end, the teaching case addresses the challenge of reconciling the action spaces of the predecessor and the successor to redefine the role of the former and protect the construction of the legitimacy of the latter. Este caso didáctico fue diseñado para brindar a los estudiantes de programas ejecutivos con enfoque en sucesiones y empresas familiares, el acceso al conocimiento del caso, contribuyendo al análisis de fenómenos que ocurren en sus realidades. La experiencia aquí relatada hace referencia a la historia del proceso de sucesión familiar en el Hospital Mater Dei, liderado por el socio fundador, Dr. José Salvador Silva, cuyo deseo era tener éxito en el proceso de sucesión, dado que la mayoría de las empresas familiares no pueden sobrevivir a la tercera generación de la familia (SOUZA, 2020). Con la preparación adecuada de los cuatro hijos, fue posible implementar reglas para el trabajo de los miembros de la familia en la empresa familiar, incluidos los miembros de las generaciones futuras. Al final, el caso didáctico aborda el desafío de conciliar los espacios de acción del triunfador y del sucesor para resignificar el papel del primero y proteger la construcción de la legitimidad del segundo. Este caso de ensino foi concebido para propiciar aos discentes de programas executivos com foco em sucessão e empresas familiares, o acesso ao conhecimento de caso, contribuindo com a análise de fenômenos que ocorrem em suas realidades. A experiência aqui relatada refere-se à história do processo de sucessão familiar do Hospital Mater Dei, conduzido pelo sócio fundador, o Dr. José Salvador Silva, cujo desejo era ter êxito no processo de sucessão, tendo em vista que a maioria das empresas familiares não consegue sobreviver à terceira geração da família (SOUZA, 2020). Com a preparação adequada dos quatro filhos, foi possível implementar regras para o trabalho dos familiares no negócio familiar, incluindo os membros de gerações futuras. Ao final, o caso de ensino aborda o desafio de conciliar os espaços de atuação do sucedido e do sucessor de maneira a ressignificar o papel do primeiro e proteger a construção da legitimidade do segundo.
