The present study seeks to evaluate, through an integrative literature review, the bone formation potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) over-expression of bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP-9). This is an exploratory, qualitative and descriptive study. For its idealization, the descriptors registered in the DeCS/MeSH “regeneration”, “mesenchymal stem cells”, “bone morphogenetic protein 9” and “growth differentiation factor 2” were linked using the Boolean operators “and” and “or” and applied to the databases from PubMed/Medline, Scielo, Bireme and Google Scholar. Of the 142 studies located in a time frame of 10 years (2012 to 2022), 12 articles published in English and Portuguese were included in the final sample. Among the results, in vitro and in vivo studies show the therapy as promising in the process of bone tissue formation. BMP-9 and CTM increased the differentiation potency of cells in the tissue, enabling the repair of extensive bone defects. Technological tools of gene editing have suggested great possibilities to revolutionize science, since they are guides for the cleavage of DNA. Future studies are needed with a focus on cell therapy, so that the applicability of this technique is scientifically deepened and can later advance to its clinical use in the health sciences. |

El tejido óseo está compuesto por células capaces de reparar, remodelar y regenerar tejidos, pero que, en grandes proporciones, no presentan resultados satisfactorios. Así, se han evaluado nuevas terapias basadas en la medicina regenerativa con células madre para solucionar el problema. El presente estudio busca evaluar, a través de una revisión integrativa de la literatura, el potencial de formación ósea de la sobreexpresión de la proteína morfogenética ósea 9 (BMP-9) en células madre mesenquimales (MSC). Se trata de un estudio exploratorio, cualitativo y descriptivo. Para su idealización, los descriptores registrados en el DeCS/MeSH “regeneración”, “células madre mesenquimales”, “proteína morfogenética ósea 9” y “factor de diferenciación de crecimiento 2” se vincularon mediante los operadores booleanos “y” y “o” y se aplicaron a las bases de datos de PubMed/Medline, Scielo, Bireme y Google Scholar. De los 142 estudios ubicados en un marco temporal de 10 años (2012 a 2022), 12 artículos publicados en inglés y portugués fueron incluidos en la muestra final. Entre los resultados, estudios in vitro e in vivo muestran que la terapia es prometedora en el proceso de formación de tejido óseo. BMP-9 y CTM aumentaron la potencia de diferenciación de las células en el tejido, lo que permitió la reparación de defectos óseos extensos. Las herramientas tecnológicas de edición de genes han sugerido grandes posibilidades para revolucionar la ciencia, ya que son guías para la escisión del ADN. Son necesarios futuros estudios con enfoque en la terapia celular, para que se profundice científicamente la aplicabilidad de esta técnica y pueda avanzar posteriormente a su uso clínico en las ciencias de la salud. O presente estudo busca avaliar, por meio de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, o potencial de formação óssea de células-tronco mesenquimais (CTM) sobre-expressão da proteína morfogenética óssea 9 (BMP-9). Trata-se de um estudo exploratório, qualitativo e descritivo. Para sua idealização, os descritores cadastrados no DeCS/MeSH “regeneration”, “mesenchymal stem cells”, “bone morphogenetic protein 9” e “growth differentiation factor 2” foram interligados por meio dos operadores booleanos “and” e “or” e aplicados nas bases de dados da PubMed/Medline, Scielo, Bireme e Google Acadêmico. Dos 142 estudos localizados em um recorte temporal de 10 anos (2012 a 2022), 12 artigos publicados na língua inglesa e portuguesa foram incluídos na amostragem final. Dentre os resultados, estudos in vitro e in vivo evidenciam a terapia como promissora no processo de formação de tecido ósseo. BMP-9 e CTM aumentaram a potência de diferenciação de células no tecido, possibilitando o reparo em defeitos ósseos extensos. Ferramentas tecnológicas de edição genética têm sugerido grandes possibilidade de revolucionar a ciência, uma vez que são guias para a clivagem de DNA. Estudos futuros se fazem necessários com o enfoque na terapia celular, para que assim a aplicabilidade dessa técnica seja aprofundada cientificamente e posteriormente possa avançar para seu uso clínico nas ciências da saúde.
