Cognate and non-cognate words in Portuguese and Spanish were considered to verify if there would be differences between the production of this words. It was also verified if there would be syllabic pattern influence from the native/mother language during foreign language production. Undergraduate students from the first and fifth semesters on the Portuguese/Spanish Language teaching course of the Federal University of Rio Grande participated in this study. The data production of these students was subjected to statistical analysis through GoldvarbX program (2005), that identified in which linguistic and extralinguistic contexts were more favoring of epenthesis completion. It was believed that the epenthesis implementation rate among students from the first semester would be higher than the phenomenon implementation rate among the students from the fifth semester due to lower contact with the target language of the initial level students. Against what was expected, however, the results showed a low percentage of the epenthesis phenomenon so that the students conserved the foreign language syllabic patterns during their production, keeping the consonant clusters and avoiding the vocalic segment insertion, regardless of the semester they were enrolled. O presente trabalho estudou a produção de encontros consonantais em espanhol de estudantes brasileiros, a fim de examinar se haveria realização de epêntese vocálica, fenômeno de inserção de uma vogal entre consoantes de sílabas diferentes. Foram consideradas palavras cognatas e não-cognatas do português e do espanhol para ver se havia diferenças entre essas palavras e também se verificou se havia influência dos padrões silábicos da língua materna durante a produção em língua estrangeira. Participaram desse estudo graduandos de Letras – Português/Espanhol da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do primeiro e do quinto semestres. Os dados de produção desses estudantes foram submetidos à análise estatística através do programa GoldVarbX (2005), que identificou quais contextos linguísticos e extralinguísticos eram mais favorecedores da realização do fenômeno de epêntese. Acreditava-se que a taxa de realização de epêntese entre os estudantes do primeiro semestre seria maior do que a taxa de realização do fenômeno entre os graduandos do quinto semestre, em virtude do pouco contato com a língua-alvo por parte dos estudantes de nível inicial. Contrariando o que se esperava, no entanto, os resultados mostraram uma baixa porcentagem de realização de epêntese, de modo que os estudantes conservaram os padrões silábicos da língua estrangeira durante sua produção, mantendo os encontros consonantais e evitando a inserção do segmento vocálico, independentemente do semestre em que estavam matriculados.
