Two aspects are of especial interest under this scope: on the one hand, the political iconography as a pillar in the Western construction of meaning, and, on the other hand, the collective concern about the End of Time in Luther’s epoch (manifested again in our 21st Century present). En su célebre ensayo “Profecía pagana en palabras e imágenes en la época de Lutero”, Aby Warburg lanzó un llamado a que “la historia del arte y la ciencia de la religión se encuentren”. Lo hizo mediante la figura del iniciador de la Reforma, quien tuvo una gravedad y una significación extraordinarias dentro del proceso de la temprana Modernidad, pues su persona condensó varias de las tensiones y enormes transformaciones de ese período. Este texto busca estudiar vaticinios, imágenes y escritos proféticos acerca de Lutero, desde, por una parte, la certeza de que el uso político de las formas iconográficas constituye un fundamento de la construcción occidental de sentido, y, por otra parte, desde la intuición de que la inquietud por el fin de los tiempos (que se ha vuelto a manifestar en el siglo XXI) será mejor comprendida si se complejiza su análisis mediante la incorporación de tales fuentes.
