Resumo:ABSTRACT: This paper aims to understand how religious racism corroborated the construction of the process of legitimation of the Umbanda religion in the early 20th century in Rio de Janeiro. We start from the premise that the whitening of ethnic-religious manifestations of African origin in the country was the main instrument that enabled the transition from popular macumbas to Umbanda, evidencing a flagrant racist connotation. We consider that the annunciation of Umbanda by Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas, on November 15, 1908, was taken as a founding landmark that historicized the religion, basing the differentiation between Umbanda and popular macumbas. Key words: Religious racismo. Whitening. Legitimation. Umbanda
