oai:periodicos.ufrn.br:article-293502022-11-28T03:56:26Z The Formula of Love: Figurations of "Pathos" in Ancient and Contemporary Nymphs A fórmula do amor: figurativizações do "páthos" em ninfas antigas e contemporâneas Tulio Baggio, Adriana Pathosformel Engram Discursive semiotics Love Woman Skirt and dress Pathosformeln Engrama Semiótica discursiva Mulher Saia e vestido The pathos formula, one of the main concepts elaborated by Aby Warburg, consists of canonical figurations of the exteriority of bodies, taken back from Antiquity by the Renaissance, and refer mainly to the internal affections. The historian analyzed the pathos of Jealousy and that of the Hero, but he did not name a certain pathos observed in the nymphs with flowing hair and robes, so well analyzed by him in works by Sandro Botticelli. This article proposes that, in these nymphs, the pathos is that of Love. This idea is justified by the presence of a figurative isotopy of love in Botticelli's works and in those that influenced the painter, as can be seen while describing and detailing the methodological path followed by Warburg. The article also exercises the identification of the formula of love in contemporary nymphs and discusses the ambivalence of the meanings of this formula: love as an over-determination of pleasure and danger.
