In this article, I comment on the reasons why this term is particularly controversial (its adoption was hesitant; it denotes both an ideological current and a set of practices or a historical stage; the ideological current has both geographical and historical variations; the historical stage is characterized by a plurality of aspects that do not always appear together), I analyze some of the most common criticisms of the adoption of this term and I suggest a definition capable of accounting for these vagueness, clearly distinguishing neoliberalism as a doctrine from neoliberalism as a set of practices or historical stage. Neoliberalismo é um conceito vago e controverso, mas ainda assim crucial para a compreensão de nossa época e da história das ideias políticas, econômicas e sociais do último século. No presente artigo comento os motivos pelos quais este é um termo particularmente controverso (sua adoção foi vacilante; ele denota tanto uma corrente ideológica quanto um conjunto de práticas ou uma etapa histórica; a corrente ideológica possui variações tanto geográficas quanto históricas; a etapa histórica é caracterizada por uma pluralidade de aspectos que nem sempre aparecem juntos), analiso algumas das críticas mais usuais à adoção deste termo e sugiro uma definição capaz de dar conta destas vaguezas, distinguindo com clareza o neoliberalismo enquanto doutrina do neoliberalismo como conjunto de práticas ou etapa histórica.
