With the advent of portable ultrasound, performing ultrasound at the service location has become relatively easy and feasible. Objective: To carry out a review of the literature seeking to evaluate clinical trials that assessed the determination of gastric volume and content by point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). Method: The selection of works was carried out in August 2021 in the PUBMED database. Two search strategies were used: 1 - Ultrasound AND gastric AND fasting and anesthesia; and 2 - bedside AND ultrasound AND gastric. No time cut was performed. However, only clinical studies were considered in the present review. Results: The search ended with 10 articles that adequately met the inclusion criteria. Conclusion: The POCUS is a non-invasive technique that is very useful in determining gastric content and volume with high sensitivity and specificity, even if gastric content is uncertain. In addition, the application of POCUS to determine gastric emptying would present good sensitivity and specificity in discriminating patients with and without ileum. Introdução: A aspiração perioperatória do conteúdo gástrico é uma complicação grave da anestesia e está associada à alta morbimortalidade, podendo resultar em pneumonia grave que requer suporte de ventilação mecânica em até um terço dos pacientes. Com o advento da ultrassonografia portátil, a realização de ultrassom no local de atendimento se tornou relativamente fácil e viável. Objetivo: Realizar uma revisão da literatura buscando avaliar os ensaios clínicos que avaliaram a determinação de volume e conteúdo gástrico por ultrassonografia à beira do leito (POCUS). Método: A seleção dos trabalhos foi realizada em agosto de 2021 na base de dados PUBMED. Duas estratégias de busca foram utilizadas: 1 - Ultrasound AND gastric AND fasting and anesthesia; e 2 - bedside AND ultrasound AND gastric. Não foi realizado corte temporal. Todavia, somente estudos clínicos foram considerados na presente revisão. Resultados: A busca finalizou com 10 artigos que atenderam adequadamente aos critérios de inclusão. Conclusão: A POCUS é uma técnica não invasiva muito útil na determinação do conteúdo e volume gástrico com alta sensibilidade e especificidade, mesmo que o conteúdo gástrico seja incerto. Além disso, a aplicação da POCUS na determinação do esvaziamento gástrico apresentaria boa sensibilidade e especificidade na discriminação de pacientes com e sem íleo.
