Considering the visions of the urban space of Rio de Janeiro through the reading of the realist-naturalist novel, we intend to discuss the conceptions of social evolutionism and geographic determinism present in the pages of Azevedo's book. Thus, the methodological procedure for analyzing the source involves “[...] understanding the social and political conflicts of the past through conceptual boundaries and the interpretation of the uses of language […]” (KOSELLECK, 2006, p. 103). In this logic, our research object consists of the literary construction of the concept of carioca tenement and the power relations established in this urban space in constant transformation. Como fonte histórica utilizaremos o romance de tese “O Cortiço” publicado em 1890 e alvo de debates até a contemporaneidade. Considerando as visões do espaço urbano carioca por meio da leitura do romance realista-naturalista pretende-se dissertar sobre as concepções de evolucionismo social, racismo científico e determinismo geográfico presentes nas páginas do livro de Azevedo. Dessarte, o procedimento metodológico de análise da fonte envolve “[...] compreender os conflitos sociais e políticos do passado por meio das delimitações conceituais e da interpretação dos usos da linguagem [...]” (KOSELLECK, 2006, p. 103). Nessa lógica, nosso objeto de pesquisa consiste na construção literária do conceito de cortiço carioca e as relações de poder estabelecidas nesse espaço urbano em constante transformação.
