With six pavements, piped water and eletrical installation, it had a notorious place at the main periodics of the city. After a decade of operation, it mysteriously disappears of the newspapers. With Prestes Maia’s Plan of Avenues and the resignification of the “modern”, emerges the need to link São Paulo to a architectural model that resembled cities like New York. Thus, the building was demolished to give room to the Wilton Paes de Almeida Building, that, years later, wold be recognized as a patrimony of the city. O artigo analisa a formação e a remodelação do centro da cidade de São Paulo durante a primeira metade do século XX, tomando como objeto de estudo o Hotel Victoria, localizado no Largo do Paissandu. Para isto, debruçou-se sobre matérias e anúncios publicitários dos periódicos mais relevantes da época, visto que eram eles os responsáveis por ditar o ritmo da vida social na cidade, retratando a busca insaciável por aquilo que era novo, bom e moderno. Em seguida, aborda-se a reformulação desse conceito, representada, sobretudo, na aplicação do Plano de Avenidas de Prestes Maia.
