As a methodological procedure, it is characterized as a qualitative research, which uses bibliographic review and analysis of documentary sources for its construction. To achieve the proposed objective, it was decided to contextualize the historical situation of the end of the 19th century, a period in which the Historical and Geographic Institute of Santa Catarina was created. It also analyzes the impacts arising from the absence of public policies that make it impossible to improve the services offered by the Institution. It points out which social groups were represented and forgotten in the Institution's publications and how the multiple cultures contributed to the formulation of Santa Catarina's identity. In addition, it specifies the composition of the documentary collection held by the library and the archive, as well as discussing how the Institution can contribute to the practices of access to information for the effective use of documentary records and for the reframing of memory. As a result, he observes that an indispensable factor for the re-reading of memory is the informational imperative held by memory institutions. It concludes, that the Historical and Geographic Institute of Santa Catarina is a considerable locus of national memory and production of identity knowledge of Santa Catarina society. Propõe-se como objetivo desse texto analisar a função social do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Santa Catarina na manutenção da memória nacional e na disseminação das informações custodiadas em seu acervo documental. Como procedimento metodológico, caracteriza-se como uma pesquisa qualitativa, que utiliza revisão bibliográfica e análise de fontes documentais para sua construção. Para atingir o objetivo proposto, optou-se por realizar uma contextualização da conjuntura histórica do final do século XIX, período em que o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Santa Catarina foi criado. Também se analisa os impactos advindos da ausência de políticas públicas que impossibilitam o aperfeiçoamento dos serviços ofertados pela Instituição e aponta-se quais grupos sociais foram representados e esquecidos nas publicações da Instituição e como as múltiplas culturas contribuíram para formulação da identidade catarinense. Além disso, especifica-se a composição do acervo documental custodiada pela biblioteca e pelo arquivo, como também se discute como a Instituição pode contribuir com as práticas de acesso às informações para o efetivo uso dos registros documentais e para a ressignificação da memória. Como resultados, observa-se que um fator indispensável para as releituras da memória é o imperativo informacional custodiado pelas instituições de memória. Por fim, conclui-se que o Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Santa Catarina é um considerável locus de memória nacional e produção do conhecimento identitários da sociedade catarinense.
