The article presents an ethnography that shows the relationships of individuals in the uses, perception and manipulation of plant resources in city apartments. Interviews were conducted with families who live in apartments in the city of Juiz de Fora/MG and cultivate plants. Thus, this study of urban anthropology shows how people from urban areas create strategies to maintain this activity despite the built environments that often make it difficult. Questions regarding the origin of the vegetable in the residence, cultivation strategies and relationships between people and plants are presented. In conclusion, cultivation is not an activity to produce one's own food, but an activity that provides the well-being and socialization of people. Entre as diversas formas de cultivo de plantas em nossa sociedade, foram analisados neste estudo os costumes referentes às plantas nos ambientes residenciais. O artigo apresenta uma etnografia que mostra as relações de indivíduos nos usos, na percepção e na manipulação de recursos vegetais nos apartamentos de centros urbanos. Foram feitas entrevistas com famílias que fazem o cultivo de plantas em Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. Assim, este estudo de antropologia urbana faz um levantamento de como pessoas criam estratégias para manter esta atividade, apesar dos ambientes construídos muitas vezes a dificultarem. São apresentadas questões referentes à origem do vegetal na residência, estratégias de cultivo e relacionamentos entre pessoas e plantas. Como conclusão destaca-se que o cultivo é uma atividade que proporciona bem-estar e socialização, para além da relação com a alimentação e a estética.
