For that, some relevant definitions of cognition are examined. In the end, it is pointed out that the definition of the mark of cognition as a context-sensitive process takes into account several factors that were added as constitutive parts of cognitive phenomena over the years, especially the 4E Cognition, which cannot be satisfactorily accommodated alongside the preceding notions of cognition. Accordingly, this article should not be mistaken merely as an exercise in intellectual history, but as a brief and accessible attempt to advance the debate. Neste artigo é defendido que a noção conhecida como “marca do cognitivo” é melhor caracterizada como um processo que realiza a função de gerar comportamento inteligente, de modo flexível e com caráter adaptativo, capaz de se adequar às circunstâncias, por ser um processo sensível a contextos. Para tanto, são examinadas algumas definições de cognição relevantes para o presente propósito. Ao final, aponta-se que a definição da marca do cognitivo como processo sensível a contextos dá conta de diversos fatores que foram acrescentados como partes constitutivas de fenômenos cognitivos ao longo dos anos, em especial a Cognição 4E, que não pode ser satisfatoriamente acomodada a partir das noções precedentes de cognição. Assim, este artigo não deve ser confundido apenas com um exercício de história intelectual, mas como uma breve e acessível tentativa de avançar o debate.
