This text aims to discuss the dilemmas, tensions and conflicts that the modernization process brought to the city of Aldeias Altas (MA) between the 1960s and 1980s. The application used in this production consisted of bibliographical and documentary research and of Oral History. The sources used were the newspapers “O Correio do Nordeste” (1961) and “O Combate” (1965), available at the Benedito Leite Library and Hemeroteca Digital. As a theoretical contribution, Berman (1986) was used on the concepts of modernity and modernization; Rezende (1997) and Sevcenko (2006) and their representations about the city, and Pesavento (2002), which made it possible to understand how ideas of the “new” and of the modern being can generate contradictions and conflicts. O presente texto tem como objetivo discutir os dilemas, tensões e conflitos que processo de modernização trouxe para a cidade de Aldeias Altas (MA) entre as décadas de 1960 a 1980. A metodologia utilizada nesta produção consistiu em pesquisa bibliográfica e documental e do aporte da História Oral. As fontes utilizadas foram os jornais “O Correio do Nordeste” (1961) e “O Combate” (1965), disponíveis na Biblioteca Benedito Leite e Hemeroteca Digital. Como aporte teórico utilizou-se de Berman (1986) sobre os conceitos de modernidade e modernização; Rezende (1997) e de Sevcenko (2006) e suas representações sobre a cidade, e Pesavento (2002), que possibilitaram compreender como as ideias do “novo” e do ser moderno podem gerar contradições e conflitos.
