description This article aims to understand the main factors that affect the mental health of master's and doctoral students from a federal public institution. To this end, an online questionnaire survey was used to analyze the students' sociodemographic profile and collect a preliminary self-assessment of these individuals regarding their mental health. Subsequently, a semi-structured interview was conducted, whose objective was to enable the development of a broader qualitative analysis on the graduate students’ perception about the impacts of the formative and academic context, in which they are inserted, on mental health. It was possible to understand the main factors that have impacted the mental health of graduate students, the motivations of students to pursue a graduate degree, their perceptions about the environment and the degree of demand of the graduate program, as well as the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in their academic lives and daily routines. In most of the interview reports, the interaction of social, psychological, economic and cultural factors affecting the mental health of students was perceived.
