Resumo:This theoretical essay articulates some fundamentals of special education with the medicalization of education. It also aims to expand the discussion on the medicalization of education as a broader historical process, which transforms complex and multifactorial social issues - marked by culture and historical context - into individual, biological, and organic.  Cultural-Historical Psychology and one of its principles that defends learning and development as a result of historicity, interaction of subjects among themselves, and their culture are the theoretical basis of this study. Hence, the importance of pedagogical mediation is emphasized, without denying that scientific knowledge, like all other goods produced in capitalist society, is unevenly distributed. The study concluded that the medicalization of education materializes an attempt to blame the individuals for their development and does not confront the current way of dealing with issues that involve learning. In conclusion, the defence of public policies and other regulatory frameworks that ensure the right to conditions that promote teaching and learning for every person are justified.
