Official publications linked to the pedagogical and medical discourses of the early twentieth century were selected, which were analyzed from a qualitative, relational and situated methodology. In various documents there are classist and preventive arguments towards childhood; this contributes to thinking of the school reading manual as a device that configured and transferred content, knowledge and values ??in boys and girls, in relation to: civility, morality, nationalism, hygiene, gender, motherhood, work, poverty, savings, etc.   Keywords: History. Este estudio presenta una serie de relaciones teóricas referidas a las nociones de progreso, género, moral y cuerpo sano adoptadas por las autoridades educativas uruguayas para pensar el lugar social y político de la infancia. Se seleccionaron publicaciones oficiales vinculadas a los discursos pedagógicos y médicos de principios del siglo XX, los cuales se analizaron desde una metodología cualitativa, relacional y situada. En diversos documentos se encuentran argumentos clasistas y preventivos hacia la infancia; esto contribuye a pensar el manual de lectura escolar como un dispositivo que configuró y transfirió contenidos, saberes y valores en niños y niñas, en relación a: civilidad, moralidad, nacionalismo, higienismo, género, maternidad, trabajo, pobreza, ahorro, etcétera. Este estudo apresenta uma série de relações teóricas referentes às noções de progresso, gênero, moral e corpo saudável adotadas pelas autoridades educacionais uruguaias para pensar o lugar social e político da infância. Foram selecionadas as publicações oficiais vinculadas aos discursos pedagógico e médico do início do século XX, as quais foram analisadas a partir de uma metodologia qualitativa, relacional e situada. Em vários documentos há argumentos classistas e preventivos em relação à infância; Isso contribui para pensar o manual de leitura escolar como um dispositivo que configurou e transferiu conteúdos, saberes e valores em meninos e meninas, em relação a: civilidade, moralidade, nacionalismo, higiene, gênero, maternidade, trabalho, pobreza, poupança, etc. Palavras-chave: História.
