The objective of the present work was to characterize the properties of castor oil, the raw material of castor oil; expose information on the extraction of castor oil and its composition; demonstrate the applicability of castor oil in the pharmaceutical industry. The type of methodology used in this study was a review of narrative literature, an online search was performed, through bibliographic survey, with detailed analyzes on the topic addressed. With the analysis it was possible to observe a plant quite tolerant to water scarcity, however, demanding in heat and light, variability in relation to size, growth habit, stem and leaf color, seed sizes and weight, oil contents. Castor oil has colorless and very pale yellow characteristics with a distinct flavor, mild odor, and is composed of ricinoleic acid, linoleic acid and oleic acid. Thus, it was evidenced that castor oil has a good application in the development of products in the pharmaceutical industry, such as in the health area, traditionally used as a laxative agent when administered orally. The same can also be applied in the cosmetics area, participating in the composition of products such as lipsticks and lip ointments, hair tonic, shampoos. It is concluded that the products developed based on castor oil have good acceptance, as well as satisfaction with the expected results.

Ricinus communis L., es conocido popularmente como ricino, caracterizado por ser una planta arbustiva típica de los climas tropicales, se obtiene el pleno aprovechamiento de su fruto como principal producto aceite. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue caracterizar las propiedades del aceite de ricino, materia prima del aceite de ricino; exponer información sobre la extracción de aceite de ricino y su composición; demostrar la aplicabilidad del aceite de ricino en la industria farmacéutica. El tipo de metodología utilizada en este estudio fue una revisión de la literatura narrativa, se realizó una búsqueda en línea, mediante encuesta bibliográfica, con análisis detallados sobre el tema abordado. Con el análisis se pudo observar una planta bastante tolerante a la escasez de agua, sin embargo, exigente en calor y luz, variabilidad en relación al tamaño, hábito de crecimiento, color de tallo y hoja, tamaño y peso de semillas, contenido de aceite. El aceite de ricino tiene características incoloras y de color amarillo muy pálido con un sabor distintivo, olor suave y está compuesto de ácido ricinoleico, ácido linoleico y ácido oleico. Así, se evidenció que el aceite de ricino tiene buena aplicación en el desarrollo de productos en la industria farmacéutica, como en el área de la salud, tradicionalmente utilizado como agente laxante cuando se administra por vía oral. Lo mismo también se puede aplicar en el área de la cosmética, participando en la composición de productos como labiales y ungüentos labiales, tónico capilar, champús. Se concluye que los productos desarrollados a base de aceite de ricino tienen buena aceptación, así como satisfacción con los resultados esperados. A Ricinus communis L., é conhecida de maneira popular como mamoneira, caracterizada como planta arbustífera típica de climas tropicais apresenta, aproveitamento integral do seu fruto obtém-se como produto principal o óleo. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar as propriedades da mamona, matéria prima do óleo de rícino; expor informações sobre a extração do óleo de rícino e sua composição; demostrar a aplicabilidade do óleo de rícino na indústria farmacêutica. O tipo de metodologia utilizada nesse estudo, foi uma revisão de literatura narrativa, realizou-se uma busca on-line, mediante levantamento bibliográfico, com análises minuciosas sobre o tema abordado. Com a análise foi possível observar uma planta bastante tolerante a escassez de água, contudo, exigente em calor e luminosidade, variabilidade com relação ao porte, hábito de crescimento, coloração do caule e folha, tamanhos e peso de sementes, teores de óleo. O óleo de mamona possui características de cor  incolor e amarelo muito pálido com sabor distinto, odor suave, sendo composto por ácido ricinoléico, ácido linoléico e ácido oleico. Desse modo evidenciou-se que o óleo de rícino tem boa aplicação no desenvolvimento de produtos na indústria farmacêutica, como na área da saúde, usado tradicionalmente como agente laxativo quando administrado por via oral. O mesmo também pode ser aplicado na área de cosméticos, participando da composição de produtos como batons e pomadas labiais, tônico capilar, shampoos. Conclui-se que os produtos desenvolvidos a base do óleo de rícino apresentam boa aceitação, bem como satisfação quanto aos resultados esperados.
