Over the past forty years the theme corporate social responsibility has increasingly attracted the interest and debate in academic and business. In this sense looking at this work, explain the most important concepts of social responsibility and ethics, as well as the evolution of the first. Furthermore, we seek to describe the determinants that resulted in the emergence of the current concept of social responsibility, behaviors considered socially responsible business and the return obtained by the companies through this action. Thus, we have the concept of corporate citizenship for not having their practice limited to specific projects to be developed in a broader spectrum, involving the entire organization, incorporating corporate social performance and with the background of sustainable development. And the concept of corporate social responsibility requires its incorporation into the company's strategic direction reflected on ethical challenges to the different dimensions of the business. Nos últimos quarenta anos o tema responsabilidade social corporativa tem, cada vez mais, despertado o interesse e o debate nos meios acadêmico e empresarial. Neste sentido procura-se, neste trabalho, explicitar os mais importantes conceitos sobre responsabilidade social e sobre ética, bem como, a evolução do primeiro. Além disto, busca-se descrever os determinantes que implicaram no surgimento do atual conceito de responsabilidade social, os comportamentos empresariais considerados socialmente responsáveis e o retorno obtido pelas empresas através desta atuação. Sendo assim, temos que o conceito de cidadania empresarial para não ter sua prática limitada a projetos específicos, precisa ser desenvolvido num espectro mais amplo, envolvendo toda a organização, incorporando a performance social corporativa e tendo como de fundo o desenvolvimento sustentável. E, o conceito de responsabilidade social corporativa requer, a sua incorporação à orientação estratégica da empresa refletida em desafios éticos para as diferentes dimensões do negócio.
