Resumo:Introduction: The differences with respect to the numbers of morbidity and mortality of children, express the economic, social and environmental disparities between countries. In this study, the aspects of morbidity and mortality will be evaluated, taking into account their outstanding characteristics and their problems constantly faced. Objective: Assess the external causes of morbidity and mortality of children aged 0 to 1 year in the Northeast region of Brazil, aiming to demonstrate the link between morbidity and mortality and the region in which the population is inserted, confirming the socioeconomic indicators of a given location. Methodology: This is an ecological time-series and descriptive study, using secondary morbidity and mortality data in children aged 0 to 1 year in the Northeast of Brazil, based on data collected from DATASUS (Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System), through the Mortality Information System (SIM) and the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH / SUS), in the five-year period, 2013 - 2017. Results: Although there are many obstacles to be overcome, such as inequalities related to economic and social growth, studies show a significant drop with respect to morbidity and mortality rates in several states in the Northeast region. Conclusions: Childhood morbidity and mortality are sensitive and extremely important indicators with regard to the living and health conditions of individuals in a given region. Most of these deaths are formed by preventable causes, in which public policies and health actions were responsible for this, as well as quality education for the population, the reality could be different and many lives could be saved.   Keywords: Mortality, northeast, child health.
