For that, we turn to the speeches of Pope Francis were delivered in Spanish and disseminated online. After the analysis of the corpus, we conclude that the modal values are distinguished based on the evaluation that the speaker makes about what he wants as something that he or she does not control, having a mental and or actional character, and understanding the relationships that establishes with the others that surround it. Neste artigo discutimos os valores modais da volição. Na primeira parte, abordamos o conceito de volição com base nos principais estudos linguísticos relativos à categoria. Na sequência, analisamos a subdivisão da volição em quatro valores modais com base em XXXX (2017b), que podem ser desideração, optação, intenção e exortação. Para isso, recorremos aos discursos do Papa Francisco foram proferidos em língua espanhola e de divulgação online. Após a análise do córpus, concluímos que os valores modais se distinguem com base na avaliação que o falante faz sobre aquilo que deseja como sendo algo que lhe foge ou não ao controle, tendo caráter mental e/ou acional, e do entendimento das relações que estabelece com os demais que o cercam.
