Resumo:Purpose: The objective of this research was to verify the expectations of graduating students of a public university in southwestern Maranhão in relation to the labor market, their views on market demands, skills and competences required in professional performance. Methodology: The methodology used was based on descriptive research with quantitative approach through a survey with predominantly closed questions applying the Likert scale. Trainees (n=70) with a confidence interval of 95% were investigated. Predominantly men and women aged 20 to 55 years. The research data were collected in the classrooms and treated with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences - SPSS 22 and Excel, allowing the construction of graphs for analysis.  Results: Regarding the professional expectation, after the conclusion of the course, there is a variation among the different areas of activity, but most of them stated that they were interested in competing and working in public agencies. Most seniors, 95.70% agreed that the accountant needs to stay current to stay active in the market. The research findings presented uncertainty among graduates about being prepared to work in the labor market.  Study Contributions: The research presents the view of the undergraduate students of Accounting in relation to the market, presenting information that aims to contribute to a reflection on the academic path in the accounting area. For further research it is suggested to expand the population to other institutions in order to make a comparison between the professional expectations of students from different universities.
