The loss of the twin sister triggers a feeling of sadness and melancholy in Halla. Einar's nebulous past, that cannot remember the trauma that haunts him, puts him in a constant search for remembrance of his past, his memories. The act of narrating, to Einar’s narrative, will represent his freedom from past. In addition, the feeling of not belonging to Iceland works as an element of union of two mentioned characters smashed by the traumatic events, unlocking the space for an important relation in the final liberation movement of both characters, Halla and Einar. Thus, to reflect on trauma marks, this paper will take into account important theoretical contributions from Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2003) and Paul Ricoeur (2007). O presente artigo propõe-se a discutir os acontecimentos traumáticos do passado como marcas significativas no desenvolvimento da subjetividade das personagens Einar e Halla do romance do escritor português, Valter Hugo Mãe, A desumanização (2017). A perda da irmã gêmea desencadeia um sentimento de tristeza e melancolia em Halla. O passado nebuloso de Einar, que não consegue relembrar o trauma que o assombra, o coloca em um movimento constante de busca pela rememoração de seu passado, de suas memórias. O ato de narrar, para a história de Einar, representará a sua libertação do passado. Ademais, o sentimento de não pertencimento à Islândia trabalha como elemento de união das duas mencionadas personagens esfaceladas pelos eventos traumáticos, abrindo espaço para uma relação importante no movimento de libertação final tanto de Halla quando de Einar. Isto posto, refletiremos acerca das marcas do trauma nas personagens mencionadas a partir dos teóricos Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2003) e Paul Ricoeur (2007).
