Chosen as time frame the creation of pro-electrification and industrialization of Cariri Committee (1949) and CELCA (1961). During this period, economic, political and cultural issues are intertwined, forming with the importance of this natural resource in the speeches at national and local level. The (re) inventions, then the image of the San Francisco River in Cariri stories handed on a balance of power between the past, present and future. Neste artigo, tencionamos introduzir uma análise das construções imagético-discursivas do Rio São Francisco, sua vinculação à história do Cariri e o cenário político-econômico para a criação da Companhia de eletricidade do Cariri (CELCA). Escolhemos como recorte temporal a criação do Comitê pró-eletrificação e industrialização do Cariri (1949) e da CELCA (1961). Nesse período, as questões econômicas, políticas e culturais imbricaram-se com a importância desse recurso natural nos discursos tanto a nível nacional como local. As (re) invenções, então, da imagem do Rio São Francisco na história do Cariri deram-se em uma correlação de forças entre o passado, presente e futuro.
