We start from the history of a Portuguese family, without context of the ‘War of the Barbarians’, obtained sesmarias and formed farmer ranches in the sertão. These Portuguese first became involved in the meat supply business in Recife and Olinda, only to have the first leather tanning factory established in Portuguese America. Using the concept of mercantile scales, analyze the business in a continental / regional perspective looking at the productive process and a structure of the meat market; Atlantic in relation to its marketing and transport in the Portuguese fleets, as well as the employment of African and global labor in the perspective of re-exporting the hides of the region via Lisbon to other parts of the world. Este artigo analisa o negócio do couro no Norte do Estado do Brasil, ou seja, na região colonial compreendida entre os territórios litorâneas e sertanejos das Alagoas, Pernambuco, Itamaracá, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte e Ceará no século XVIII. Partimos da história de uma família de portugueses que, no contexto da ‘Guerra dos Bárbaros’, obteve sesmarias e formou fazendas pecuaristas no sertão. Esses portugueses envolveram-se primeiro nos negócios de abastecimento da carne em Recife e Olinda, para só então disporem da primeira fábrica de curtir couros estabelecida na América portuguesa. Empregando o conceito de escalas mercantis, analisamos o negócio numa perspectiva continental/regional atentando para o processo produtivo e a estrutura do mercado da carne; atlântico em relação a sua comercialização e transporte nas frotas portuguesas, bem como o emprego de mão de obra africana e global na perspectiva de reexportação dos couros da região via Lisboa para outras partes do mundo.
