Coerced between prohibitions and permissions, the descendants of African slaves have fought and still fight for their right to manifest their devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary and the patron saints along the streets of their town and also to win the respect of the local population for this cultural expression. In this sense, the political struggle faced by the Congado can be seen through different actions, like the conquer of Oliveira ?s public spaces - that are considered by them as sacred and part of their ancestral history - and against racial discrimination. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar as lutas políticas enfrentadas, ao longo dos anos, pelos participantes da festa do Congado da cidade de Oliveira (MG). Em meio a proibições e permissões os descendentes de escravos lutaram e ainda lutam para conseguirem manifestar sua devoção à Nossa Senhora do Rosário e aos santos padroeiros pelas ruas da cidade e também conquistar o respeito da população local à sua expressão cultural. Nesse sentido, a luta política dos congadeiros pode ser evidenciada através de diferentes ações como a conquista de espaços públicos de Oliveira, considerados por eles, como sagrados e que fazem parte da história de seus antepassados, e contra as discriminações raciais.
