Resumo:The main objective of this article is to analyze the political struggle faced by the Congado Celebration in Oliveira (MG) throughout the years. Coerced between prohibitions and permissions, the descendants of African slaves have fought and still fight for their right to manifest their devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary and the patron saints along the streets of their town and also to win the respect of the local population for this cultural expression. In this sense, the political struggle faced by the Congado can be seen through different actions, like the conquer of Oliveira ?s public spaces - that are considered by them as sacred and part of their ancestral history - and against racial discrimination.
