Broadening Antonio Candido’s (2010) idea, found in Formação da literatura brasileira, this study stems from the assumption that not only our literature, but also our criticism is eminently interested in the process of producing the sense of our culture and country, generating symbolical forms frequently associated with social tensions. We verified the existence of four value perspectives on the 1930s novels: the political perspective of early studies, in which the critics tried to connect the author’s visions of the world to the ones that are animated by the narrative; the documentary one, in which value stance was contiguous to social and mimetic aspects; the permanence one, in which the work’s quality is associated with the prolongation of tensions; and the qualitative notion, which is related to the construction of novels that differ from the reappearance of neonaturalistic aesthetics. Tencionamos, neste artigo, identificar a alteração dos sistemas valorativos pelos quais as narrativas de 30 passaram ao longo dos estudos a elas dedicados. Ampliando a ideia de Antonio Candido (2000), contida em Formação da literatura brasileira, partimos do pressuposto de que não apenas a nossa literatura, mas, também, a nossa crítica é eminentemente interessada no processo de construção do sentido de cultura e pátria, gerando formas simbólicas amiúde ligadas às tensões sociais. Por meio dessa noção, constatamos quatro miradas valorativas sobre o romance de 30: a política de primeira hora, normalmente tentando aliar cosmovisão do escritor com a cosmovisão animada pela narrativa; a documentária, em que a postura valorativa estava contígua ao aspecto mimético do social; a de permanência, em que a qualidade da obra recai sobre o prolongamento de suas tensões; e a noção qualitativa relacionada com a construção de obras que vão de encontro ao reaparecimento da estética neonaturalista.
