However, the mere linguistic knowledge is not enough to prepare students to have an intercultural vision that leads them to know different cultures and relate them to their own. This knowledge is not inherent to the language teaching, thus it is necessary that professors intentionally help their students to relate their culture to others and to feel empathy to different points of view. This ideia is corroborated by several authors. This study has as its focus the presence of two English Teaching Assistants in a classroom at the language course at a federal university in the southeast. The main objectives of this study are to check the expectations of students and teachers concerning the presence of a native speaker in the classroom and investigate to what point they believe that the intercultural development must be part of the teaching of a language. The results suggest that all people involved believe that the intercultural competence development is one of the main contributions of the presence of teachers from a different nationality in the classroom. O conhecimento de uma língua estrangeira já vem sendo apontado há anos como não apenas um direito, mas uma necessidade de alunos em todo o país. No entanto, o mero conhecimento linguístico não é suficiente para preparar os alunos para uma visão intercultural que os leve a conhecer diferentes culturas e relacioná-las com a sua própria. Neste caso é necessário que haja um ensino específico dessa competência. Este conhecimento não é inerente ao ensino de língua, sendo necessário que professores intencionalmente ajudem seus alunos a relacionar sua cultura com outras e a ter empatia com diferentes pontos de vista. Essa ideia é corroborada por vários autores. Este estudo tem como foco a presença de duas ETAs (English Teaching Assistants) em salas de aula do curso de Letras de uma universidade federal da região sudeste. Como objetivos principais deste estudo temos verificar a expectativa de alunos e professores em relação à presença de um professor nativo em sala e investigar até que ponto eles acreditam que o ensino intercultural deve fazer parte do ensino de língua. Os resultados indicam que os envolvidos acreditam que o desenvolvimento da competência intercultural é uma das principais contribuições da presença de professores de uma diferente nacionalidade em sala.
